Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted virus in the United States, with an estimated 6 million new infections occurring each year. An estimated 75 to 80 percent of women and men will get HPV in their lifetime. For most, the virus clears on its own. But, for some women who don’t clear certain types of HPV, cervical cancer can develop.

HPV Stories: Michele's Story

When Michele Baldwin, a 45-year old single mother, was diagnosed with cervical cancer she knew she wanted to do something to help increase awareness of the disease. Michele partnered with the Global Initiative Against HPV and Cervical Cancer (GIAHC) to complete a 700-mile paddle board expedition across the Ganges River in November 2011, with the goal of helping to increase knowledge about cervical cancer and its prevention among women in India.

Christine Baze is a cervical cancer survivor. She was diagnosed with an advanced form of the disease at age 31, and immediately underwent a hysterectomy followed by radiation and chemotherapy. Christine now works to educate women about HPV and the prevention of cervical cancer.
